Castiel:
Angel, fallen angel, God, faith healer, mental patient. Unable to restore the wall in Sam's mind, Castiel tried a different approach, siphoning the memories of Hell from his soul like a sponge. Shifted them from Sam to himself, Lucifer and all.

The memories are like a poison; Castiel isn't human, doesn't have a soul and so they're attacking his grace instead, burning it out, slowly but surely stripping it away.
